Outdoor Painting - Plumer Road, Singapore
Javier is 4.5 months old now and he likes to put his hands into his mouth... a natural habit of babies but with the saliva and heat, rashes have developed around his cheeks and mouth since Sunday :(
I haven't done any outdoor/plein air painting for about 3 weeks as I have been busy with work where our whole department was required to work over 2 weekends for our company's annual reorganisation project.
Now that it's over, I went out for plein air painting last Sunday with a group of watercolourist friends. We chose this old shophouse at the corner of Plumer Road in Singapore, just a stone throw away from Little India.
I painted this building about a year ago but at a different angle. So, I thought I'd choose another angle to paint this time.... and I think the composition is much more interesting.
I chose to paint a tighter composition to fill the buliding into 3/4 of the paper,to give a more intimate closeness between the viewers and the painting.
... and here's the finished painting where I took 3 hours to paint most of it on location, and finished off the detailed bits and pieces at home.
It's half sheet of Fabriano Artistico (14" x 21"),painted with Winsor & Newton,Rembrandt and M.Graham Artists Watercolour Paints
Here are some close-up shots of the painting.

Hope you like it... comments and critiques welcome as usual. :)

Have u modified the banner on the right said? haha! 泰山当? Hmmm.. not much for a crtics except your shadowing is a bit pelik.
Let's say the 2nd floor wooden window. Don't you think it looks like a glass? A shaded glass-like window. The cast of the shadow should look more natural (light blue maybe) in order to reflect the colour in between. hehe!
And looks like your sun direction is on 45 degree (1 PM) or like that \\\\\\
while your 2nd floor shadow is like that //////
And the taar (ROAD) no road-lines want? Perhaps some road-lines can show viewers a modern city feel, or you want this watercolour to be more retro? hehe! Retro is nice! Ops.. sorry for the bad comments. :P Your watercolour is far more steady and beautiful than mine. LOL! I doubt my skills are still usable after idle for like 7 years? lol!
Hi Wayne,
It's always the dilemma when painting outdoors, what to include, what not to include, as you can't possibly paint everything you see. So, I opted to exclude the road lines, tall buildings in the backgroup, and simplify the background shops as well.
As for the shadowing, you're right. It wasn't a sunny day, and not much shadows, so I have to create it myself. I guess I was in two minds whether it should be //// or \\\\.
Hey, you should pick up watercolours again... I stop for more than 8 years before I start all over again... if you want to, you know who to talk to for materials, techniques, etc. :-)
Hmmm.. but curently I am more onto web design and graphical. 90% comitted to computer. If you're suggesting me to use back watercolour, hmm maybe I need to re-consider. Other than watercolours, crayons was another long lost hobbies. LOL!
May I ask.... are your one of the student of 张柳青 (I forgot but something like that) /张老师 (pass away already) @ Pandungan there?
Splendid pieces Marvin. Myself haven't had time to paint too. Everyday is s rainy day here in Malaysia and I think Singapore is very much the same, don't you think? Your kid's all grown up. Congrats and be a good dad hah!
Wayne, I think I know which teacher you're referring to. But, no.. I'm not one of 张老师's students but a few of my friends were. I went to Lawrence Ng in Kenyalang instead. Anyway, that was during primary school... I stopped painting after I went to university and picked it up again in 2002 when I studied under a Singapore artist Loy Chye Chuan for about 2 years...
Hi Swee, it's been raining on and off but usually in the afternoon so I'm still able to go out and paint from time to time.... ;-)
OIC, I tot' we were 同门师兄 hahahaha! And you've achieved what you desire finally oh, congrats! Miss Kuching or much to Singapore life now?
